World Ozone Day Celebration at PDM University

The Life Science society – BION of PDM University celebrated the 31st anniversary of ”World Ozone Day” on September 14, 2018. This day is celebrated worldwide as a commemoration of Montreal protocol which was signed on September 16, 1987 to protect the stratospheric ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances (ODS). The “World Ozone Day” was designated by the United Nations General Assembly. This is one of the most successful protocols till now.

The event started with the inauguration and announcement of student office bearers of Life Science society “BION” by Dr. Laxmi Narula. It is a dynamic society constituted by all the students and teachers of the Faculty of Life Sciences. It aims to give a holistic approach to education and to have a closer interaction between the students and teachers.

Prof. Rup Lal, a highly distinguished scientist and a Former Dean of Faculty of Science, Delhi University was the Chief Guest at this event. Prof. D K Chaudhary introduced the Chief Guest. Prof. Rup Lal delivered an interesting and informative talk on “The Microbiome: Its Impact on Environment, Human Health and Society”. PDM University Vice Chancellor Prof. A.K. Bakhshi, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. R.C.Bhattacharjee, Deans of different faculties, faculty members of Life Sciences along with students attended the event. Prof. A.K. Bakhshi encouraged students to inculcate in themselves innovative and communication skills and to participate enthusiastically in all academic and co-curricular activities for their all-round development. He also told students about Ozone layer and its pivotal role in human health and welfare.

A poster and a debate competition on environmental issues such as Plastic Ban: a Boon or a Bane and Ozone Depletion : Causes and Remedies were also organized during the day. There were 37 participants in poster making and 7 in debate competition which were evaluated by Prof. B.P. Singh (Dean, Law) and Prof. Y.K.Mathur (Dean, Physical Sciences).  The winners were given prizes by the Chief Guest. The day ended successfully with a group photograph and memento presentation to Prof. Rup Lal.
